Once the Kinect Sensor is powered on you will see the green LED light andthree cameras. The camera in the middle is the RGB camera. The two outer cameras are the depth sensors. According to Microsoft these two outer cameras “combine an infared projector to allow Kinect to see the room in 3D under any lighting conditions.”

The Xbox 360 Kinect does track better with darker lighting. The darker the better. Too much light causes a glare and makes it hard for the Kinect to “see” your actions.

There are four cameras throughout the Kinect Sensor. They are used to detect voice commands around the room.

After the Kinect is powered on with the Xbox 360 it will try to detect a person in the room with the motorized vertical tilt. Once you are detected it will try to fit you into the frame as much as possible.

The first time you power on the Xbox 360 Kinect you will be prompted to set up the audio. It will take several minutes but this is something that you are going to want to do. Doing this will ensure that your voice is understood and other sounds are ignored.

You can be automatically signed in to your Xbox 360 Kinect whenever you walk in front of it if you set this feature up. Set up is easy, you just follow the on screen movements dong different arm poses.

Once you have everything set up the way that you want it you will get to the dashboard of the Xbox 360 Kinect. You can use the dashboard with your voice or hand gestures.

You need to stand up and use your hand to move the icon over the menu item you want to select. You can try this while sitting but it does not always work very well from a seated position.

Using voice commands is easy to do once the Xbox 360 Kinect is set up to recognize your voice. Voice commands are limited but the command of “Xbox” will pull up a list of all commands that you can use.

When you are playing a game or watching a video or movie you may need to pause the Xbox 360 Kinect. With no controllers how would you do this? There is a pause function that you use your body to put into action.

You place your right hand down at your side and raise your left hand with your palm out at a 45 degree angle and then wait a second or two. The dashboard will come up with a pause menu. An alternative to this would be to keep a gamepad nearby and just pause it.

The Xbox 360 Kinect is for people of all ages young and old. It may not be quite so popular with hard core gamers just yet but it perfect for family fun and parties. There are plenty of games coming out that will turn the heads of the hardcore gamers.
